During a power cut, keep freezers and refrigerators closed to reduce spoilage. Fridges will keep food cold for around 4 hours, and a full freezer will keep food frozen for around 48 hours.

Unlike some explosions, the time lapse between awareness of a gas leak and it leading to an explosion can allow for evacuation – which may minimise or eliminate causalities.
If you suspect there has been a gas leak:
- do not smoke or light matches
- shut off the gas supply at source
- open doors and windows
- evacuate the building and immediate areas
